Should I really blame myself? I mean, I understand that I don’t spend as much time driving around town as I should, and I don’t subscribe to the local paper, but shouldn’t there be a better way to let people know that a big town celebration is coming up? Signs or something?
I do read the only version of the local paper, but usually only the news section. You know when I’ll read about this in the news section? After it’s over. That’s when I always read about things there. The few times I read the events section they list things that are already over. I’m not a fan of the paper.
Sometimes we learn about things from flyers coming home from school with Junior, which I appreciate. That’s how we hear about Sholan Farm activities.
But if the whole point is to get maximum attendance, why not put some effort into letting people know it’s happening?
So we found out about this because we heard the fireworks. So we missed out and they missed out on selling me stuff. All because I don’t subscribe to the paper, their online version doesn’t even bother letting folks know on the main page, and I don’t happen to drive through downtown, where I’m sure there is a sign. All my fault.
I’m sorry Jody, I knew….and I didn’t tell you. I should have known better.
Next time I promise you’ll be the first person I tell! =)
Hi, I’m a lurker, but I just had to comment on this.
I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND! The exact same thing happens here. We learn about some cool stuff via school, but when my daughter forgets to bring fliers home (often) or in the summer, we tend to miss out.
I’ve often thought about volunteering (or finding a way to get paid?) as a roving Gal-About-Town, who would search for all the cool stuff to do in town and bring the info to the peoples. Sadly, around here, not as many folks are online as one would think/hope.
Pam.
THAT’S what all that booming and banging was about! I was reading the Sunday paper and heard “gunshots.” Got really freaked, too. Glad it was just that!
Was it Starburst?
Nicholle, I totally blame you. Thank you for being there to accept it.
Pam, are you local to me or do you just live a parallel life? Did I mention that when Junior empties his desk over the next 2 weeks I will receive notification for things that happened in December?
Christine – yup, that’s it. Now didn’t that used to take place a little closer to the 4th? I seem to recall it was *after* school let out for the summer. Of course, because it was a rain date, it was a school night. That was a little late for us on a school night (Junior was already in bed and popped up to look out the window when it kicked off.)
I missed it and I read the paper. Don’t remember seeing it. My daughter went and said there was several fights and arrests. Seems to be attracting trouble makers lately.
Saturday they were around my neighborhood looking for a guy with a gun who robbed the Flower store down the street. Starting to get like the Bronx..
To know the real news you have to hang out at the right coffee shops and know some of the townies.
Jeez, Jerry! Which flower shop? I have a feeling we live in the same neighborhood…
Well, now I had to go look at your profile to find out where you are. In fact, I don’t even remember how I found you in the first place – no doubt via the blogroll of someone else – but I enjoy your writing style! Anyway, to answer your question, I’m in the burbs of Chicagoland and we must have parallel lives because I also found out about fun doings from last semester in the kid’s backpack. I think they teach paper-hoarding in fourth grade, in addition to how to drive your mom batsh*tcrazyinsane just by rolling your eyes. –Pam.
That’s how *I* always find out about fireworks around here. Well, actually I live in Detroit, so I also find out when the news talks about someone doing something stupid like shooting into the crowd.
The Flower shop next to American Harley got hit on the southside (of Leominster). I talked to guy at Venient tonight and he scared. I live on southside rt12, ala. Calorie Row (4 restaurants (2 more coming) & 3 donut shops w/i a mile)…
Thanks everyone, for taking the blame off me. I guess I just don’t get it. Don’t they want people to show up? Aren’t they selling stuff? I have cheese money and I have an 8 year old who consumes junk food. We like to do fun things.
I think this is just shoddy marketing. Maybe I’ll get brave and post my thoughts to the new Sentinel blog. Or not.
